I am sure many of you at some point have used an old mechanical cable release, it enables you to push a button tethered to your camera to take a picture without physically touching the camera yourself (old time selfies?)

+Triggertrap Mobile is the next generation of trigger devices/apps that enable users with iOS or Android phones to trigger their DSLR’s in a variety of fun and helpful ways.
There are of course remote triggers from the major manufacturers such as Nikon and Canon that let you do SOME similar activities but they are typically upwards of £60, this is where the extremely affordable Triggertrap comes into play.
(I’d just like to add that I used the HTC One M8 and a Canon 6D for this review)

Triggertrap Mobile is a free to download app on iOS or Android and is used in conjunction with Triggertrap’s affordable hardware (£23 - £24) which hooks up to your DSLR.
The hardware is a dongle used to attach your smart phone to your camera of choice.
There are a variety of cables that you must search through to find the relevant one to match your camera, but luckily it’s easy to do just by inputting your camera brand and model on their website.

Triggertrap Mobile gives users 14 modes in which they can trigger their camera, ranging from standard push button, timed release, all the way to more specialized modes such as Star Trail and DistanceLapse.

An overview of the modes:
Simple Cable Release – Tap the button to take a picture
Press and Hold – Touch to start, release to stop
Press and Lock – Touch to start. Touch to stop
Timed Release – Choose your shutter speed
Timelapse – Travel through time
TimeWarp – Timelapse with acceleration
DistanceLapse – Perfect for roadtrips
Star Trail – Extreme exposure control
Bramping – Bulb ramping timelapse
Sound Sensor – Clap, Whistle or Trap
LE HDR – Long Exposure HDR sets
LE HDR Timelapse – Long exposure HDR timelapse
Wi-Fi Slave – Trigger remotely
Wi-Fi Master – Take Control

As you can see, there are a multitude of modes available at your fingertips, and they all work as intended. Whether you are a keen amateur or a seasoned pro, everyone will be able to find a mode that will excite them or be beneficial in some way.
The Triggertrap Mobile 2.0 app is very easy to read and navigate, it even opens with a small tutorial that guides you through some basic functioning.

Everything is laid out in a simplified manner that means you can just tap on the mode you want, then it has a handy little sentence or two that tells you how to use it.
I got the idea on how most of them worked straight away, but a there were a couple of occasions using some of the more advanced modes that I felt a bit overwhelmed. A bit of searching online and I was away, thanks to the helpful forum users on their site and the company themselves.

The product worked without a hitch on my HTC One M8 and the Canon 6D, with only a miniscule amount of lag to be seen (hardly even worth mentioning to be honest). Don’t worry it is the same with all triggers, even the manufacturer sold ones, so this is nothing new!
I cannot speak for how it performs on other setups, but I have only heard good news reported from most users, and any problems that do crop up are usually handled very quickly by the lovely Triggertrap employees.

You get a plethora of options within the app, and if you are a natural creative you will come up with a ton of new possibilities on how to use the device to its full potential.
The most used mode for me was the timelapse feature and the standard push button (yes I am that boring typically) but they worked without a hitch and were a pleasure to use.
Timelapse lovers in particular are going to rave about this product, it gives you a great amount of control over how many photos are taken, how long the shutter is open for, how far apart images are taken, even how far apart geographically they are taken (if using the DistanceLapse mode).

I’ve seen some great works of art come from the use of the app/dongle and I am sure in the months to come we will see even more.
For the price you pay, Triggertrap makes a stunning product, a truly exceptional alternative to the other remote shutter releases out there.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, I implore you to support this great company and give it a go.
Let’s be honest, for the price you really can’t go wrong.
