Professional Model Etiquette

“I’m a model...” are you?  Apart from the favourable looks and build, attention to model etiquette is the key to progression.
Let’s go through a few areas that you need to pay close attention to.

If you've got an account, be savvy as to what you post.  These social platforms are your shop window, the first sources of information to find out who you are and what you’re up to.  So ‘what you’re up to’ doesn’t mean the finer details of your breakfast this morning, the fact that you’re feeling down after a bad day, bored or tired, sick or hungry... be very careful.  Keep an eye on your cell or tablet at all times, ‘fraping’ can do the utmost harm.
Most models separate their accounts, personal and professional.  With Facebook, for example, keep a personal account for the true and trusted, then open up a model page specifically targeted at the progress of your modelling career to date.

Interaction with photographers
This is probably the area I’m most familiar with... I’m about to marry one!  I know it’s difficult and costly to build a portfolio, high quality images that will move your career forward sometimes come at a price which is out of the budget of a lot of aspiring models.  It’s therefore very easy to almost drool at every image that’s published of you, good or bad, just because it’s out there.  A professional photographer will never publish images that throw doubt in the minds of the observer.  Remain impartial, appreciate talent but never flirt in order to progress.

Attitude...
There’s no doubt about it, if you want to be a successful model, you have to be confident.  Confidence can easily be confused in its meaning and appear as arrogance.  The modelling industry is a tough one, only the strong survive at any level, but an arrogant attitude can tip the balance and send your career spiralling to the bottom of the pile.  Always get your facts together before a casting, research and become au fait with the client’s brief and sell yourself to match that brief, your image and portfolio should back up your confidence... a bad attitude holds no place in the spotlight.

 Working with other models
Probably the most important piece of advice I can offer is to treat other models with respect.  The industry is made up of so many genres, no one model ticks every single box.  You will come into contact with models you would want to aspire to, others you wouldn't, but in all cases maintain dignity and respect for those around you.  Your career path will meander around many obstacles, the route to where you want to be will not be a straight one.  You will encounter other models who appear to have it made with what appears to be recognition and notoriety in the industry but behind the scenes, it could be a totally different scenario.  We all encounter difficult situations and individuals that will prove to be perhaps antagonistic in some ways, but rise above, believe in yourself and your future prospects, touch up your lipstick, a quick spray of your favourite fragrance and smile... always works!
