OCC Lip Tars - Do we love them?

Posted By: Unknown - Thursday, August 28, 2014

Hey everyone, how are we all doing? So this is my first post as a guest blogger for Million Models Magazine and I just want to say a big thank you to them for asking me to do this.
I was lucky enough to work with the guys here at Million Models Magazine on their photoshoot for the May issue and they are such a great bunch of people, really lovely and the magazine is also fabulous so I feel really privileged to be asked to write on their blog. Thanks guys!
Anyhow, today I wanted to let you all know my thoughts on a particular lip product which I think a lot of people would definitely have heard of by now and it’s the OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) Lip Tars.

The first thing I noticed with this product is that a little goes a very long way, you seriously do not need a lot at all and the so price tag of £11.50, purchased from Selfridges (also available online at Amazon), is amazing, these tars will last forever.  I put the smallest amount on the back of my hand and still didn't use all of it.  They have a great coverage and it is also buildable if you want achieve a deeper shade.
I tried the Lip Tar in the shade Harlot.  In the packaging this looks like strong red with a slight pink undertone but actually goes on the lips extremely bright with a strong orange undertone which I actually really liked.
Now I only used this tar on my lips with no exfoliating first, no lip liner, nothing as I wanted to get an accurate feel for the product.  I am definitely recommending that you use a lip liner with this product though especially if your lipstick has a tendency to bleed.  As you can see in the picture below the colour is slightly bleeding out from my top lip.  A darker shade of liner would look fab with this colour as you could slightly ombre the lip.
Use a small, flat and pointy lip brush to apply this product I find that this shape brush works best for example a MAC 316 brush (available HERE) would work perfectly.   I personally used a Crown Brush C170-4 Oval Taklon brush.  I didn't swap brushes for different sections of the lip I just stuck to this one for the entire application.

I must stress to anyone using these lip tars, be very careful,  they are so messy and just remember that these are lip stains and will most probably stain anything it touches.  It does seem to take quite a long time to “settle” into the lips but hey, most lip products in a bold colour do come off on glasses etc.
The OCC Lip Tars are a great product for all you makeup artists out there and I personally think they should be a staple in every MUAs kit.  They come in a variety of fabulous bold, bright and beautiful colours which would be perfect for many photoshoots or other jobs if you need a lip colour with longevity.
I have now had Harlot on my lips for approximately 5 hours and it has dried out enough that the colour is no longer coming off but it is still extremely bright.  I have eaten and drank since applying the product and this is the result after 5 hours of wear………………

Impressive Right?
My final thoughts…..I really like these Lip Tars, they are incredibly pigmented, the colour payoff is to die for and I most certainly will be buying many more of the colours.  There are a few I have my eye on.   They are 100% vegan & cruelty free and so should really appeal to everyone.  I really love them and I do recommend all of you trying these out even if it means you get just the one and try it out.
Let me know your thoughts by commenting down below if you have already tried the Lip Tars or if you do go and invest let me know.
If there is a particular product that you would like to read about then let me know and I will do my best to review it for you.
So that’s it for me guys be sure to check out the rest of Miliion Models blog and also pop over to my Youtube channel for more makeup reviews, tutorials etc, my channel name is just “Nikki Rowley”.
Thanks very much for taking the time to read this and I shall be back soon with another post for you all.
Take Care

LG G3 - Simply Stylish

Posted By: Unknown - Sunday, August 24, 2014

LG G3

As most of you may know, LG brought out the G2 a while back that won many accolades and awards from the industry AND from users alike.
They are not stopping there however, and this is a rundown on the new flagship LG G3. Will it live up to the incredible innovations that the G2 brought? ‘Simple is the New Smart’? We think so too!

Design:

LG for the longest time have been improving their designs across the board, whether it’s phones, TVs or home appliances. So it is no surprise that you will not be let down by this stunning phone.
The body of the phone itself is a lovely shape, and enables users with bigger hands like me a very comfortable grip.
There are no buttons around the perimeter of the phone unlike conventional designs, as the LG G3 keeps the Rear keys, whereby the volume and power button are embedded in the rear of the phone just under the camera.
For me personally this was a bit strange coming from a phone that didn't have this feature, but now that I’ve used it, I find the pros of this design.
No longer am I accidentally turning the phone on or knocking the volume buttons in my pockets, and I’d like to see this design on other phone variants in the future.

The rear of the phone houses a nice fingerprint-proof polymer removable panel, which while removing the annoying fingerprints does get scratched quite easily, although I don’t see this being a big issue. I guess you can simply just buy a new rear panel if it frustrates you that much in the future.
Underneath the panel, houses the G3’s 3,000mAh removable battery and space for sim and micro-sd cards.
The phone has a 1W speaker on the rear (you can see the cut-out for it on the case at the bottom left) and provides excellent fidelity. Not quite up to the excellent HTC One M8’s speaker system, but certainly not terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

LG has provided a bunch of features that improve the use of the phone too, starting with the innovative Smart Keyboard that is said to improve your typing and remove a lot of the silly mistakes you may make by learning how you type.
Plus the addition of Smart Notice which will give you little notifications based on your usage, location and the phones status.
So it can tell you that you have been making quite a few calls to a specific number, and ask if you want to add to contacts. Or if you are running low on battery it will remind you to put it into Battery Saving mode. Quite convenient, and not so in your face that you feel forced to do what it says, just a handy reminder.

This phone is simplicity at its finest in terms of design, everything feels streamlined and just ‘works’.

Simple is the new Smart.

Camera:

The LG G3 houses many awesome features in terms of its cameras and I’ll try to shed some light on them.
First off, the G3 has a first in the mobile world which is the Laser AF which accompanies the OIS+ Rear camera, which is set to change the way you capture photos.
If you have ever missed a shot because your camera was busy going back and forth in focus before firing, this is going to make you very happy.
Laser AF catches focus by measuring the time it takes for the beam it sends out to reach a subject and get back, which makes the sensors capable of extremely fast focusing even in low light.
I have to say, it does this extremely well, I have had far fewer moments where I have missed a shot purely down to the AF system, so I would say that this is a great step forward.
The camera also has some very nice specs, it has Dual LED flash on the rear, Optical Image Stabiliser Plus which is said to improve the camera-shake you may experience in other models and is a VERY respectable 13 Megapixels.

You have a few options when using the camera app, although compared to other brands it does seem a bit limited in terms of modes.
There is the standard AUTO mode which is what you should be using like 90% of the time, as it handles all the stuff behind the scenes and just lets you aim and snap.
You also have the option to pick between Dual, Panorama or Magic Focus.
Dual mode takes a photo using the rear camera and the front camera at the same time, so you can have a selfie while showing off your surroundings.
Panorama does what it says on the tin and enables you to slowly pan the phone and get a horizontal stitched Panorama of your environment.

The most interesting feature is Magic Focus, which enables you to take photos and then choose the focal point AFTER the fact, much like the HTC One M8 does, but this uses software to do it rather than the hardware solution HTC had.
You have to hold the camera still while the software slowly rotates through the focal plane and cameras images as it goes, then it enables you to pick a spot after, or simply say that you want it all in focus.
Got to say, it works wonderfully, while I don’t personally have many occasions I would use it, I can see that it will be helpful for those that do.

As we live in a ‘Selfie’ era, of course the front camera is quite important, and this doesn't disappoint. Boasting a generous 2.1MP, larger image sensor and larger aperture, your selfies will have never looked better.
It also has a nifty feature that is sure to impress your friends, simply aim the camera at you and hold your hand up, then clench into a fist and a 3-second timer triggers, enabling you to have an awesome hands free experience.
The video mode on the LG G3 is also fantastic, boasting up to 4K recording at 30fps and 120FPS at 720P, you will most assuredly not be disappointed. The 4K recordings look simply stunning, especially on the G3 screen, which we will talk about next.

Screen:

Heralded to be one of the nicest screens on a recent phone by many, this phone lives up to the hype.
It is 5.5 inches, runs a Quad HD display which is 2560x1440 and gives it a pixel density of 538ppi.
That is 4x the resolution of standard HD and 1.8x Full HD, and it does show.
In comparison to a standard screen you will at first be hard pressed to see a drastic difference, but when viewing photos, videos and high definition content you will definitely notice the increased resolution this display offers.
Everything is sharper, more vivid and just jumps off the screen.
When looking at your own 4K videos on this device, you will be blown away at the definition.
My favourite screen on any phone of 2014 so far for sure.

Performance:

Well you may be saying to your yourself, Ok it has a great camera and screen, but does having that capability make it lag or drain the battery too fast? The short answer is…No.
When using the phone I noticed no real performance hiccups in comparison to other units we have tried, except for the occasional bug (although I suspect this is more an Android problem than this device).
Everything flows smoothly on screen, and it can handle even the most demanding applications, the hardware used is top notch so that is no surprise.

Battery & Call Quality:

Batteries nowadays are a big issue in phones, it’s great having these features, but what if the batteries runs out in a few hours and you don’t get to use it as much as wanted.
Considering this has a 4K display I can forgive you for feeling it may be weak on the battery life due to the increase usage, but I can honestly say that the massive 3,000mAh battery really does handle the increased resolution.
Through a typical day of usage, I only run down once and that was while playing a hefty amount of games, but I’d usually still have a good 10-15% left before charging at night.
So as long as you charge it nightly, you’ll be fine with this.
In reference to call quality, glad to report everything was loud and clear, and the microphones provide a very clear call to the person on the receiving end as well, big thumbs up from me.

Conclusion:

The LG G3 is quite simply an outstanding phone, from the Quad HD display, 4K video recording, the Laser AF, stunning camera, Simply Smart features that give you a slick experience, the G3 has surpassed my personal expectations and comes with my highest recommendations.
A well made flagship phone that gives the users what they need and what they want.
LG you have done yourselves proud with this beast, it’s a beautiful piece of engineering and a pleasure to use, well done!

Safety First

Posted By: Unknown - Friday, August 22, 2014

Safety First by Phoenix Rain

Every model wants the big break. No matter how seasoned you are, or which level of the profession you are at, there is always something more to strive for and it is this promise of the next big thing that makes us vulnerable.

For novice models, particularly the younger ones, it is very easy to be pressured into a situation where you are taking off your clothes because you want to seem professional. You are on a shoot, the photographer makes comments about your posing ability, your experience and compares you to other models he has worked with and suddenly you are feeling insecure and vulnerable. You don’t want to be the prudish model that, “hasn’t got what it takes”.

The comments are made in such a way that they come across as friendly advice, rather than rude. You feel like something is wrong but you can’t voice your concern because you are suddenly unsure of yourself. The photographer is paying you for your time and you are scared of upsetting a paying client. Yet, you have gone from feeling like a professional to an amateur novice in the space of 20 minutes. Please know right now that this is nothing to do with you! In situations like this, the manipulator knows exactly what he/she is doing...

If you find yourself in this situation, the scenario can move on very quickly from feeling uncomfortable to doing things you never thought would happen in a million years. Saying stop or having the intuition to get yourself out of a dangerous or threatening place may seem like an obvious thing to do from the outside but when you are in that place it is very easy to for panic to take over and suddenly you are frozen.

Now, I could write a thousand articles about preparation being key, pre-shoot communication, letting someone know where you are and who you are with. To be honest, no matter how prepared you are these things aren’t going to help you when you are faced with a situation that has gotten out of control. When you become frozen, rational thinking does not exist.

Understanding the way manipulators work and the mind-games they play to get you into a vulnerable position is far more useful. If you know the warning signs then pack your bag and get the hell out of there. Fast.

I must give credit to Veronica Varlow at this point. A while back when I found myself in a similar situation I read her article, “7 Tricks Manipulators Use To Get You To Do Anything They Want”. It is well worth reading and shows you that no matter how famous someone is, no matter what the job is, there is always a chance that the shoot can turn into your worst nightmare.

Trick #1 - I thought you were a professional...?

Your desire is the easiest thing to use against you. A manipulator will ask you questions about your sincerity and question your ambition. They will tell you the only way to get your break is to do the things they are asking you to do. They will question your professionalism and your ability to work in the industry.

“How bad do you want it?”

“I thought you were a professional model, don’t be a prude!”

“I can’t even see you from behind the camera, I’m not looking at you, I’m looking at the shot!”

Trick #2 - They make you feel inadequate

They use veiled or even direct insults to make you feel inadequate. They put themselves in a position of authority and make you feel so insecure about yourself, using anything they can against you. It maybe your age, your complexion, your figure or posing ability. Once they have you feeling completely inadequate they use your need for approval against you to get you to undress or into a position where you are completely vulnerable.

“Do you get much work then?”

“Have you thought about a modelling course?”

“It’s just easier if I show you how to pose...”

NEVER LET A PHOTOGRAPHER CROSS INTO YOUR PERSONAL SPACE OR TOUCH YOU ON A SHOOT!

Trick #3 - They will act like they are going out of their way for you

The most difficult thing about this kind of situation is that everything comes across like a friendly suggestion to “help you” see where you are going wrong. They will act like they have a vested interest in your success and that the things they are suggesting are only for the benefit of your career.

“You see how this outfit make you look bigger? If you lose this then we can make that same shot look top notch”

“It’s really difficult to get a shot here, is there a bedroom we could use?”

“I’ll edit / crop the photo so you can’t see anything but we need to do it like this to get the shot”

Trick #4 - They will compare you to others

They will talk about other models they have shot with and how natural they were, how much fun they were to work with and how busy those models are with bookings. They will intimate that you are none of these things, but if you do what they are asking you will have a chance at breaking the industry, fame and recognition.

“Have you seen the images on my port? You see that model Miss X, now there’s a true professional. She has no qualms about doing XYZ and she’s impossible to get bookings with now.”

Trick #5 - Two or more people telling you the same thing will make you feel like they are right and you are uptight, immature and a prude

Any situation where an assistant, PA or other person condones the behaviour of the photographer will always make you question why you are feeling weird about a situation.

“Speak to any of the models I’ve worked with”

“Your agency has booked you for this. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years now, I’ve worked with hundreds of girls and I know how to get the best out of you.”

Trick #6 - They will make you feel like you are backing out of a contract and that not complying is career suicide

“I’ve already paid you for this booking, it’s my time that is being wasted here”

“If you want future work, I suggest you learn how to take direction”

“If you nail these images then you’ll definitely go on my list of regular bookings”

Trick #7 - They will attack you personally

“Look your complexion isn’t the best is it?”

“You’ll never make it as a model, you’re so uptight you look like a lump of wood”

Situations like this can escalate so fast you barely have time to recognise what is happening. After my bad experience I felt disgusting, cheap and completely inadequate. I burst into tears immediately and was shaking so bad I could barely dial the number of my friend to tell her what had happened.

Lucky for me I knew things were going bad and walked away physically unharmed.

Number one rule - know the signs. Safety first.

Death by Facebook...and Other ways to commit social suicide

Posted By: Unknown - Wednesday, August 20, 2014

“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise”

“If” Rudyard Kipling, 1914

Rudyard Kipling got it spot on, even in 1914 the rules of professional and social conduct were exactly the same as they are now. Those that keep their heads will always see success.

This last month I have been swept up in the trauma of moving house. With the event being so sudden I have barely had time to blink, let alone check my Facebook. This last 2 weeks we haven’t even had internet access. Even with the incredible stress of the house move, this last two weeks of disconnect have been utterly joyful.

It is only upon my return to Facebook that I realise how much I detest being online and how stressful it is reading about other people’s problems all day.
Seeing the social network with fresh eyes, the pure narcissism hit me like a freight train, (yes I realise you are “PMSL/ROFL/LOLLING” all over the place as you read that last sentence, I do realise the irony of that statement).

Think about it though, where else would you butt into other people’s conversations, start arguments just for the hell of it and base your worth on the number of people that like your comments? I mean other than Parliament...

For creatives though, the social network explosion has catapulted our industry into the stratosphere. It has completely revolutionised modeling and you are no longer tied to the agency structure to make a successful career these days. Social media will get you far more exposure than any agency alone if used correctly, but models beware, because the very things that make your success so tangible also leave you seconds away from social suicide.

I have been in the fitness industry for 10 years now. I suppose like any industry it seems a very small place to be when you’ve been working with these people for so long. Everybody knows each other and it doesn’t pay to fall out with people professionally. Careers are built on reputation, the same as any business.

Why is it then, that this very obvious principle does not seem to carry over to the amateur modelling and photography industry? Every day on Facebook I see slanging matches between models, photographers and personal insults being casually doled out in professional forums. Have I missed something here? Is there some unwritten caveat that makes it copacetic to be as provocative as you please, providing you have the protection of a screen and keyboard?

Maybe it is because these people do not see their social media activity as an extension of their portfolio? Let me ask you this...would you let an agency or a client read your Facebook page?

Rules for Social Success

1)  Set up a fan page as a public figure. Use this page as a professional forum to engage with your fans and the public. This also means you don’t have to constantly post your images all over your personal page, so you stand less chance of alienating your “normal” friends. Trust me, no matter how close you are, they will get sick of it.

2)  Set up a profile that you use to engage with industry contacts. This is where you can have conversations and “network” professionally. Do not let these people access your personal profile. Keep a strict line between business and pleasure.

3)  Most importantly, have a private profile that you use for family and friends. Do not give these people access to your professional profile. It is not just what you post that builds your reputation, it is also the interaction from your friends. If you need to rant, curse or raise hell, this is where you do it. NOT on your professional wall.

4) Have a social identity. I don’t mean you have to create an alter ego, (although that probably is best), but you do need to create a voice. This gives you the ability to build a brand based on core values and principles. It takes away ambiguity and allows you to target a specific audience.

5)  Be consistent. Use the same profile image and message across your social media profile. Engage with your fans across different platforms but give them a consistent experience wherever they find you.

Professional conduct is the foundation of any successful business. Don’t throw yourself to the suicide abyss before you’ve even begun.

Clothing by Young Ted

Young Ted is a relatively new clothing brand based in the UK that aims to celebrate, in their own unique and subtle way those memorable moments in British history.

We had a quick chat with the lovely people running the Twitter page over at @YoungTedClothes, and before we knew it, we had a lovely little package for review sent on its way!

It arrived a few days later, and I ripped open the nicely sealed package to reveal a plethora of colourful t-shirts.
The quality of the clothes is immediately visible, the feel of the material, the stitching, the fantastic print designs.
These are the types of t-shirts I would wear personally, and I feel they are most definitely in fashion right now.
They have a large variety of designs, including from some of the great British comedies such as ‘Steptoe & Son’, ‘Only Fools & Horses’ and even ‘Porridge’. I’m sure a lot of you out there know of a friend or family member that would love to have a little memento from one of those series, and Young Ted provides!
Even had my Dad asking for one once he saw the line-up we had, so it definitely appeals to a large diverse group of people, awesome.

From the Self-Promoting Young Ted designs (which are still quite spiffy!) to the cool ‘Indie’ style designs, they are all awesome.
Their logo is actually very distinctive and cute, we really like it.
My favourite personally has to be the designs with all the variations of glasses / moustaches, perhaps because I am a glasses wearer myself, but it is definitely chic and in style.
We will be sure to keep these in our photo-shoot wardrobe for the future, so keep your eye out for them!

If you want to take a gander yourself, go follow them on Twitter @YoungTedClothes

Be sure to check out their site at www.YoungTed.com

Paul M - The Interview

Posted By: Unknown - Wednesday, August 20, 2014

Paul M

First off Paul, give our readers a brief introduction into who you are and what you do.
Recording artist whose aim is to inspire others with what I do; singer, songwriter, keyboardist, production, mixing, mastering, sound engineer, host, videographer and actor.

What first got you into the music scene?
I have loved music since I was given my first keyboard at the age of 6 by my late grandmother. I then went on to study music through school, college and university. Later building it more up since leaving university, I went onto DJ-ing, hosting karaoke and performing at events.

Did you always have a natural affinity with music making and performing in general?
During my studies I have loved everything to do with music; especially studying music history as well. Since the young age of 6 I was also able to listen to a song and reproduce it in perfect pitch.

We see that you have worked with a few TV celebrities, tell us a little more about those experiences.
I am truly grateful of their support and they all completely have mine. When I appeared on ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ (Series 11 Episode 1) I was so pleased to see my friends James Locke and Daniel Osborn whom I talk to regularly and support me. It was also lovely to meet everyone else and click with Gemma Collins, whom now also supports me; for which I couldn’t be anymore grateful and honoured. I have also appeared at various charity events, had numerous radio station interviews including New York’s leading radio station BEG and a television interview with ‘The Chrissy B Show’.

Out of all the celebrities you have met, who were you a little star struck by?
Star-struck, what is that? To get somewhere and ask for support there is no time to be star struck. Everyone who has made it has worked hard and I must do the same. I would never want people to be star struck by me but to appreciate the support and inspiration that I shall give others in the future.

What is up next for Paul M?
I would love everyone’s support and aim to give so much back to others which includes charity work, appearing as a guest of many radio shows and also want to be able to visit schools to encourage everyone studying music that anything is possible; even taking part is lessons or teach a class/help in projects and would love to do a tour.

From where do you seek inspiration when song writing?
I am inspired by everyone who is there for me; I listen to others, keep everything to myself and come up with song ideas that is based around situations that everyone can relate to.

Do you have any role models and if so, who and why?
I myself would love to be the role model to everyone that studying, supporting others and hard work is the way forward. I also would like to simply pull everyone together and support one another without the need for selfishness and greed. I am also inspired by anyone else who truly writes and produces their own songs; which is sadly very hard to find today.

What is your all-time favourite song? Does it hold a special meaning for you?
My all-time favourite song has to be Phil Collins – Two Hearts. It resembles people coming together, it’s well written and is so cheerful.

Where can people go to hear more from you?

Have you family been supportive of your career?
I’d like to say that it’s my Dad and friend who lives in my home that mainly has to put up with hearing my music and I’m always asking for their opinions; even when the songs are only half done! Many thanks to them both for putting up with me and it was them who help set up and build my studio.

Do you have any announcements you would like to make to our lovely audience?
Do the right things, be there for others, work hard, study, never be afraid to ask for support and always be polite.

Your new single 'Inspirational' has just been released recently, how has it been received so far?
I am so proud that it has been the most positively received song that I have ever done and everyone says that more and more people need to hear it to send out the positive message that it portrays; that if you put your mind to it you can make a change, have powerful positive repercussions of the things that you could do and pick yourself up. It has now eve got official ratings on iTunes and here are also what people have said:

“A fantastic song by an amazing singer/songwriter. His music really reflects what a lovely and genuine person he is!” Sarah-Louise Hibbs

“This song is just what the title says…inspirational! Beautiful words and sensational voice from the awesome talent that is Paul M! I love it…you’re going to love it too!!!” Susan Heywood.
